Exposure to homemade alcohol is a real exam for a novice distiller. In many ways, success will depend on the right choice of barrels.
The cooperage market offers a large number of options in which it is easy to get confused.
Aging in oak barrels — what is it for.
Not all alcoholic beverages are aged in barrels. Many light red and white wines, fruit distillates from plums, cherries or strawberries are consumed fresh.

But for most full-bodied and fortified red wines, as well as port wines, this is a mandatory procedure. And strong drinks like whiskey, rum or cognac - without aging will remain a transparent distillate. More than 500 chemical reactions take place in barrels, as a result of which drinks get their own unique organoleptics.
Distillers have such a thing as a "barrel triangle". One side of it is the nature of the raw materials stored in the distillate. The second is the properties of the barrel, which depend on the tree, the place where it grew, and on the skill of the cooper. All this gives birth to a third party - the final product, which acquires new noble features.
From this wisdom of distillers, we come to the conclusion: if the first two sides of the triangle suffer, then we will not get high-quality alcohol. It is not necessary to pour bad distillate or purchased vodka into a good barrel.
